Visioning and strategic planning help court leaders challenge court and justice system practitioners to think beyond daily problems and crises, foster and sustain internal and external cooperation and collaboration, and develop better justice system and community partnerships.
Abstract
In addition, visioning and strategic planning help court leaders better allocate limited resources; improve the daily practice of court management, particularly case management; improve both public communications and public perceptions of courts and the justice system; and create futures driven by the judiciary's commitments to justice under law, independence and accountability, equality, fairness, integrity, and public trust and confidence. The article examines what court managers should know and be able to do with regard to visioning and strategic planning and also looks at court purposes, jurisdiction, structure, processes, and performance. Organizational foundations critical to the strategic direction of courts are discussed, along with the importance of adjusting to change and developing leadership skills. 2 figures
