Information technology in criminal justice agencies can aid the development, maintenance, and use of the individual file, which is the link between all stages of case processing and now can take the form of a virtual file that combines documents, information, and work flow management.
Abstract
The documents and information in the individual file accumulate over a lengthy period of time. A virtual file in a computerized information system can be accessed simultaneously by all authorized people at any time. Different agencies and countries collect and use the information in different ways. Therefore, no single solution fits all circumstances. The best way to handle such a situation is through a pilot test of a project-based solution. The four stages of a successful project are to define the goal, design the solution, develop and implement the solution, and follow up. Each stage has several parts. A project may be outsourced to a professional company with experience, specific skills, and proven management tools. Success requires teamwork among the professionals of project management, the customer's data processing department, the users, and senior management. Footnotes
