Virginia's Hospital Protocol for the Treatment of Sexual Assault Victims

NCJ Number

Date Published
1990
Length
94 pages
Annotation
This protocol is designed to assist Virginia hospitals to minimize the physical and psychological trauma to the victims of sexual assaults and to maximize the possibility of collecting and preserving physical evidence for potential use in legal proceedings.
Abstract
The adult protocol emphasizes sensitivity to victim needs, payment of medical fees, transfer plans, intake procedures, reporting to law enforcement authorities, victims' compensation, and victim/patient consent. The protocol discusses evidence collection in terms of using the physical evidence recovery kit (PERK), preserving the integrity of evidence, and gathering hairs and fibers as well as clothing for possible evidence. The protocol also outlines the procedures for the medical examination and the release of evidence and for post-examination information. The child's protocol deals with many of the same issues including facilities, intake procedures, reporting, consent, and the medical examination. Issues specific to child sexual assault victims that are discussed here include child interviews, law enforcement procedures, and the roles of parents or guardians.
