STATISTICS ON CONFINED JUVENILES IN VIRGINIA ARE REPORTED FOR FISCAL YEARS 1974 THROUGH 1976.
Abstract
BASED ON DATA OBTAINED FROM FELON INMATE FILES, THE PROFILE OF THE AVERAGE YOUTHFUL CONFINED OFFENDER OVER THE YEARS 1974 THROUGH 1976 IS THAT OF A BLACK MALE BETWEEN THE AGES OF 18 AND 20 WITH NO PRIOR FELONY OR MISDEMEANANT RECORD, BUT WITH A JUVENILE RECORD. THE TYPICAL JUVENILE IS A DRUG USER WITH NORMAL INTELLIGENCE WHO HAS AT LEAST A FIFTH-GRADE EDUCATION. HE IS SERVING LESS THAN A 10-YEAR SENTENCE, FOR COMMITTING AN OFFENSE AGAINST PERSONS. HE IS NOT MARRIED AND HAS NOT SERVED IN THE MILITARY. GRAPHS PROVIDE INFORMATION ON THE 1976 DISTRIBUTION OF YOUTHFUL OFFENDERS BY AGE, OFFENSE, HABITS, AND AGE GROUP. TABULAR DATA ON YOUTHFUL OFFENDERS FOR THE FISCAL YEARS 1974-1976 ARE PROVIDED FOR RACE AND SEX, PREVIOUS FELON AND MISDEMEANANT RECORD, COMMITTING COURT, JUVENILE RECORD, TERM OF SENTENCE, COMMITTING OFFENSE, MARITAL STATUS, STATUS OF PARENTS, HABITS, INTELLIGENCE, EDUCATION, AND MILITARY SERVICE.
