FINDINGS ARE PRESENTED OF A SURVEY OF VIRGINIA SHERIFFS AND LOCAL JAIL OFFICIALS THAT DESCRIBE THEIR EVALUATIONS OF THE 1978 SHERIFFS' MANAGEMENT CONFERENCE COORDINATED BY THE VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS.
Abstract
SURVEY EVALUATION OF THE CONFERENCE WAS CONDUCTED BY THE BUREAU OF RESEARCH, REPORTING AND EVALUATION OF THE VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS. TEN SEPARATE QUESTIONNAIRES COVERING TEN SPECIFIC CONFERENCE SESSIONS WERE DEVELOPED FOR VIRGINIA SHERIFFS' EVALUATIONS THROUGH LIKERT SCALE RESPONSES AND OPEN-ENDED COMMENTS. IN ADDITION, SHERIFFS EVALUATED THE OVERALL CONFERENCE THROUGH COMPLETING A 4-PAGE SURVEY CONTAINING 20 ITEMS. THE SUBJECTS OF THE SESSIONS ARE PROVIDED. AN OVERVIEW OF THE INDIVIDUAL SESSION EVALUATIONS SHOWS THAT 723 INDIVIDUAL SESSION QUESTIONNAIRES WERE CORRECTLY SUBMITTED, WITH 29.2 PERCENT OF THE RESPONSES COMING FROM SHERIFFS. ON THE QUESTION OF WHETHER SPEAKERS PROVIDED ADEQUATE INFORMATION ON THEIR TOPICS, 92.4 PERCENT OF THE RESPONDENTS INDICATED THAT THEY DID. ABOUT 93 PERCENT FELT THERE WAS ENOUGH TIME ALLOWED IN THE SESSIONS TO COVER THE TOPICS; WHILE 89.4 PERCENT FELT THERE WAS SUFFICIENT TIME ALLOWED FOR QUESTIONS. ABOUT 87 PERCENT FELT THAT, OVERALL, THEY LEARNED USEFUL INFORMATION THAT WILL ASSIST THEM IN CARRYING OUT THE DUTIES OF THEIR JOBS. DETAILED FINDINGS FROM THE OVERALL CONFERENCE SURVEY WERE NEARLY IDENTICAL. IN ADDITION, THE OVERALL SURVEY RESULTS INDICATED THAT 95-98 PERCENT OF THE 107 RESPONDENTS TO THE OVERALL SURVEY FELT THAT THE CONFERENCE WAS INFORMATIVE. TOPIC PREFERENCES FOR NEXT YEAR'S CONFERENCE WERE ALSO INDICATED. DETAILED SURVEY RESULTS OF INDIVIDUAL SESSIONS ARE DISCUSSED AT LENGTH; AND THE FORMATS OF THE INDIVIDUAL SESSION AND OVERALL SURVEY FORMS ARE PRESENTED. THIRTY-ONE DATA TABLES ARE PROVIDED IN THE TEXT.
