STATISTICAL DATA REGARDING PERSONS DISCHARGED FROM PAROLE AND PERSONS VIOLATING PAROLE FOR THE YEAR ENDING JUNE 30, 1977, COMPILED BY THE VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS ARE PRESENTED.
Abstract
THE TOTAL NUMBER OF PERSONS DISCHARGED FROM OR VIOLATING PAROLE INCREASED 22.3 PERCENT IN FISCAL 1977 OVER FISCAL 1976. DISCHARGES FROM PAROLE INCREASED 28.4 PERCENT, WHILE PAROLE VIOLATORS INCREASED 11.1 PERCENT; THE TOTAL NUMBER IN BOTH CATEGORIES WAS 1,438 FOR FISCAL 1977. PAROLE VIOLATORS REPRESENTED 32.1 PERCENT OF TOTAL PERSONS RELEASED. AN EVALUATION OF THE DISTRIBUTION OF VIOLATIONS BY TYPE SHOWED THAT 34.9 PERCENT COMMITTED FELONIES, 16.5 PERCENT MISDEMEANORS, 18.2 PERCENT BROKE REGULATIONS, AND 30.4 PERCENT ABSCONDED. TWENTY-ONE PAROLE VIOLATORS WERE WOMEN; OF ALL VIOLATORS 61.6 PERCENT WERE NONWHITE AND 38.4 PERCENT WHITE. FOR PAROLE VIOLATORS THE MEDIAN LENGTH OF SENTENCE AT THE TIME OF PAROLE WAS SIX TO NINE YEARS. REGARDING PAROLEES DISCHARGED, 977 PERSONS WERE INCLUDED DURING 1977. THIS FIGURE REPRESENTED A 28.4 PERCENT INCREASE OVER 1976. OF PAROLEES DISCHARGED, 93.4 PERCENT WERE MALE, 6.6 PERCENT FEMALE. NONWHITE PAROLEES ACCOUNTED FOR 51.8 PERCENT, WHILE WHITE PAROLEES NUMBERED 48.2 PERCENT. SINGLE PAROLEES WHO WERE DISCHARGED NUMBERED 531 OR 54.4 PERCENT, WHILE THOSE WHO WERE MARRIED, LIVING WITH SPOUSE, REPRESENTED ONLY 19.0 PERCENT. AT THE TIME OF PAROLE, 64.2 PERCENT HAD A TOTAL SENTENCE OF FIVE YEARS OR LESS; ONLY 1.2 PERCENT WITH LIFE SENTENCES WERE SUCCESSFULLY DISCHARGED FROM PAROLE SUPERVISION.
