This book presents an overview of fatal and non-fatal violence in Australian workplaces and identifies research and policy options for its prevention and control.
Abstract
Workplace violence has only recently evoked widespread public concern. Failure to address the issue in any meaningful fashion has impeded acceptance of this activity as another dimension of "real" violence. While many people fear stranger danger, especially the prospect of dying at the hands of some homicidal maniac, there is actually greater risk of encountering some form of violence at work or in a work-related context. The book provides an overview of the qualitative and quantitative literature relating to workplace violence, explores the multifaceted nature of the phenomenon, its multiple causes and preventive approaches. Research on workplace violence is fragmentary, suffers from basic methodological flaws and, more often than not, is not comparable at a national, let alone an international, level. The book recommends the generation of more comprehensive, uniform data on workplace violence and more systematic dissemination, cataloguing, and evaluation of basic risk management principles and situational prevention strategies.
