This curriculum addresses the problems of violence and homicide among adolescents by helping students become aware of homicide and associated factors, positive ways to deal with anger and arguments, the dynamics of fights, and alternative choices available to young people in conflict situations.
Abstract
The specific goals of the curriculum are to increase students' awareness of the causes and effects of violence and of their own risk of becoming victims of homicide; to enable students to recognize the negative short- and long-term consequences of violence; to teach students that anger is a normal emotion and can be expressed in constructive ways; and to show students that violence is preventable. Each of the 10 sessions in the curriculum is outlined, and includes goals, student objectives, a teacher introduction, preparation suggestions, class procedure, discussion topics, optional activities, quizzes, and handouts. The videotape that accompanies the curriculum package shows the author helping teachers to prepare by reviewing each session and answering questions. The videotape also shows a teacher facilitating a classroom role play and students acting out situations in which they can employ nonviolent conflict resolution skills.
