THIS PAPER IS A CONDENSATION OF A STUDY OF VIOLENCE AND VICTIMIZATION WITHIN 10 CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS IN NORTH CAROLINA. THE MAJOR FOCUS OF THIS PAPER IS ON THE VICTIM OF ASSAULT, NOT HIS ASSAILANT.
Abstract
THE AUTHORS FEEL THAT THIS PAPER PROVIDES THE FIRST COMPREHENSIVE QUALITATIVE PROFILE OF IN-PRISON VICTIMIZATION. DATA IS EXTENSIVELY USED, TOGETHER WITH MICRO-ECONOMIC ANALYSIS, TO ADVANCE CONCRETE POLICY DIRECTIVES AIMED AT REDUCING THE VICTIMIZATION RATE. THE FIRST SECTION OF THIS PAPER PROVIDES ESTIMATES OF THE EXTENT TO WHICH ASSAULTIVE VICTIMIZATION OCCURS WITHIN NORTH CAROLINA PRISONS. THE SECOND SECTION ESTABLISHES SOME OF THE DIRECT, POLICY-RELEVANT CORRELATES OF VICTIMIZATION. THE FINAL SECTION DISCUSSES THE POLICY IMPLICATIONS OF THE STUDY, AND ADVANCES SEVERAL SUGGESTIONS FOR REDUCING IN-PRISON VIOLENCE AND VICTIMIZATION. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)...MSP
