This video uses interviews, documentary footage, and some dramatization to examine the services required to address violence by and against Latinos.
Abstract
The first violent incident examined is the Los Angeles riot after the Rodney King verdict, a riot in which many Latinos participated. Interviews with a Los Angeles Councilman and community and organizational leaders note that the Latino community in Los Angeles lacks social and economic services as well as a infrastructure necessary for access to such services. They suggest that frustration that leads to violence can be relieved through leadership that emphasizes adequate housing and a community infrastructure that provides social and economic opportunity. The second violent incident examined is a drive-by shooting that resulted in the death of a 14-year-old Hispanic girl who was at the birthday party of a friend. The video focuses on mental health services for the family members, friends, and fellow students. Interviews with counselors, family members, and friends focus on the grieving process and what services are needed for homicide survivors. The third type of violence focuses on domestic violence in general among Latinos. Interviews and dramatization focus on why it is difficult for Latino women to leave an abusive marital relationship.
