Abstract

The publication sketches an overview of a complex problem. It aims at presenting, to the general public as well as health and political community leaders, an analysis that could be useful in confronting and controlling a pressing social problem. It emphasizes violence against women and children, which seems to be strongly linked to longstanding cultural practices that tend to perpetuate the cycle of violence: the child who is abused at an early age can later become an abuser in his family and a violent member of society. The booklet also investigates: violence as a public health issue, classification of violence, causes of violence, juvenile violence, violence against the elderly, political violence, costs of violence, and actions against violence.
