A COLLECTION OF ARTICLES WHICH PRESENT AN IN-DEPTH STUDY OF VIOLENCE EMPHASIZING ITS DEFINITION, CAUSES, AND EFFECTS AND SUGGESTING METHODS TO COMBAT IT.
Abstract
FOLLOWING A BRIEF DISCUSSION OF THE HISTORICAL AND CONTEMPORARY BACKGROUND OF VIOLENCE IN AMERICA, THE AUTHOR PRESENTS ARTICLES BY VARIOUS WRITERS WHICH DESCRIBE A POSSIBLY VIOLENT SITUATION. AT THE END OF EACH CHAPTER, DISCUSSION QUESTIONS ARE PRESENTED SO THAT THE STUDENT (TO WHOM THIS BOOK IS DIRECTED) MAY DRAW HIS OWN CONCLUSIONS AS TO WHETHER OR NOT VIOLENCE HAS OCCURRED. IN DEFINING VIOLENCE, EXAMPLES RANGE FROM AIR POLLUTION TO MASSACRES. THE ARTICLES ON THE CAUSES OF VIOLENCE PRESENT MANY OF THE SOCIETAL CONDITIONS WHICH ARE MOST LIKELY TO PREVENT OR CONTRIBUTE TO VIOLENCE. THESE INCLUDE PHYSICAL CONSIDERATIONS-BRAIN DAMAGE, SOCIAL PROBLEMS-PREJUDICE, AND POLITICAL CONCERNS-CHANGE IN RULES AND POLITICAL EXTREMISM. THE SET OF ARTICLES ON EFFECTS OF VIOLENCE DEALS WITH THE IMPACT OF VIOLENCE ON PEOPLE'S ATTITUDES, PERSONALITIES AND DESIRES. FINALLY, SUGGESTIONS, SUCH AS GUN CONTROL, ARE OFFERED TO CURB VIOLENCE.
