This study examined intimate partner violence among women at risk for HIV and with histories of criminal justice system involvement.
Abstract
The work found that intimate partner violence (IPV) was associated with having a current main partner, substance use, sexual risk behavior, trading sex, anxiety, depression, and lower self-esteem. The category other violence (OV) was associated with no current employment or schooling, unstable housing, drug use, trading sex, anxiety, depression, and lower self-esteem. This research which examined the prevalence and correlates of intimate partner violence and other violence among women at risk for HIV and with histories in the criminal justice system, found that the 3-month prevalences of IPV and OV were 31.2 percent and 18.7 percent, respectively. It was noted that the high prevalence of violence demonstrated the need for intervention in this population; the correlates showed that effective interventions must address the complex issues in these women's lives. This study used data from the baseline assessment of the Portland Women’s Health Study, a trial funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse. The study participants were women who reported at least one HIV risk factor and had been either recently incarcerated, or currently on parole or probation. The health study screening involved 3,024 women in Portland, OR between 2001 and 2004, from which a sample of 529 were derived for a baseline assessment. Tables, references
