Women in Australia are the most frequent adult victims of sexual assault and domestic violence, and changes in legislation and legal procedures have been integral to developing an improved understanding of and effective responses to these forms of abuse.
Abstract
The Violence Against Women Indicators Project (VAWIP) began in 1995 to coordinate research on the criminal justice system response to violence against women. The goal of VAWIP is to provide reliable national data to government officials so they can devise the most appropriate responses. Past Australian research on domestic violence and sexual assault is reviewed, future research directions are noted, and available data on domestic violence and sexual assault involving female victims are summarized. Future research priorities are identified, and specific recommendations to prevent violence against women are offered. Supplemental information on data collection, protection order legislation, and key indicators of violence against women is appended. 136 references, 15 tables, and 5 figures
