This article describes dTective, which is a set of audio and video forensic analysis instruments that can provide clarity and detail to video images that are otherwise useless because of their poor quality.
Abstract
One of the dTective tools can remove snow and rain and enhance a dark video by removing noise and video graininess. Another dTective tool allows the analyst to separate the camera views, rearrange them, and view them in a variety of ways. A third dTective tool converts digital files to analog video. It permits the user to capture the digital video clip and then use the other dTective tools to process the video. dTective can also be used to improve the lighting and details of images captured with a patrol car video system. Ocean Systems manufactures dTective, and both purchase and leasing options are offered. A turnkey system is available for $13,500. Due to the user-friendly format, the dTective forensic tools are not limited to experts in video forensics; they can be used by officers who do not work forensics full-time. Formal training is available, as is technical support.
