SURVEY OF INNER CITY RESIDENTS CONDUCTED TO DETERMINE THE EXTENT OF UNREPORTED CRIME AND ATTITUDES ABOUT THE ADEQUACY OF POLICE SERVICES.
Abstract
THE SURVEY DATA INDICATED THAT THERE WAS A VERY HIGH INCIDENCE OF UNREPORTED CRIME IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD, EVEN FOR SERIOUS CRIMES OF VIOLENCE. YOUNG PEOPLE BETWEEN THE AGES OF EIGHT AND FIFTEEN EXPERIENCED THE LARGEST SHARE OF ALL KINDS OF VICTIMIZATION, PARTICULARLY IN THE FORM OF ASSAULT, ROBBERY, LARCENY, AND MALICIOUS MISCHIEF. THEY WERE FOUND TO RARELY REPORT THESE CRIMES TO THE POLICE. NEIGHBORHOOD RESIDENTS INDICATED THAT THEY WERE MORE SATISFIED WITH THE POLICE THAN WITH ANY OTHER COMMUNITY SERVICE. THE APPENDICES CONTAIN TABLES OF THE TYPES AND NUMBER OF UNREPORTED OFFENSES.
