Vented suppressive shielding (VSS) is a relatively new form of security device for protection from explosions and is being applied to storage containers, explosives disposal units, and protective walls and barriers.
Abstract
VSS protects people, buildings, and equipment from the damaging effects of the blast pressure, fragments, fireballs, and flames that can result from an explosion. VSS can vary widely in size. Each application is designed by physics and engineering formulas that rest on the quantity of explosive involved, the type of hazard, and the degree of protection required. The technology was developed for use in United States Army ammunition plants and is now being used by the United States Navy. It is also being used in several ways. Using it to separate different areas of airline, bus, and rail terminals can increase protection from terrorist attacks in these locations. It can also be used to cover weapon systems and components that must be carried over public highways and that are vulnerable to damage from terrorist bombs or small arms.
