The crime rates of women both as offenders and victims increase as women become 'emancipated,' in the same way that crime increases in developing nations; and for the same reasons.
Abstract
Victim survey data from the national crime panel are analyzed to reveal the manner in which, as women become increasingly detached from the female 'gemeinschaft' world, their vulnerability to crime increases. This increase is partly a result of their movement into the 'gesellschaft' world and partly a result of their poverty (relative to men) in the broader world. Crime and 'liberation' will continue to be 'venerable bedfellows' unless crime prevention methods adequate to the gesellschaft world are created. (Author abstract)
