A complete guide to the identification of domestic and foreign vehicles, including light trucks manufactured between 1938 and 1968, is presented to assist law enforcement and motor vehicle registration agencies to identify vehicles.
Abstract
This manual furnishes information on where to look for vehicle identification numbers and how to interpret them. Prior to 1955, most States registered motor vehicles by engine number. The identifying numbers prior to 1960 were referred to by a variety of terms. For the vehicles of this manufacturing period, detailed descriptions give location of engine number, serial number, or other identification numbers. Attention is given to the codes representing manufacturer's symbols such as body style, year, assembly plant, and sequential identification numbers.
