TO REDUCE SCHOOL VANDALISM, ADMINISTRATORS AND PLANNERS SHOULD CONSIDER SUCH ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS AS LOCATION OF WINDOWS, LANDSCAPING, MATERIALS USED IN SCHOOL BUILDINGS, SCHOOL LOCATIONS, AND COMMUNITY ATTITUDES TOWARD SCHOOLS.
Abstract
THE DESIGN OF A SCHOOL BUILDING SHOULD BE EXAMINED IN LIGHT OF THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITY. IN AREAS WHERE WINDOW BREAKAGE IS HIGH, ADMINISTRATORS MAY CONSIDER ALTERNATE SCHOOL DESIGNS WITH MORE WINDOWS FACING A COURTYARD. GLAZED GLASS CAN BE USED INSTEAD OF REGULAR GLASS FOR ADDITIONAL SECURITY. COMMUNITY ATTITUDES PLAY A ROLE IN SCHOOL SAFETY, AND THE COMMUNITY SHOULD BE ALLOWED A VOICE IN THE PLANNING AND DESIGN OF SCHOOLS TO ENCOURAGE PRIDE IN THEM. PROPERTY DAMAGE, IT MUST BE REALIZED, MAY BE A RETALIATORY GESTURE AGAINST SCHOOL POLICIES AND PERSONNEL....DMC
