THIS TEXT DESCRIBES THE DEVELOPMENT AND OPERATIONS OF THE ALCOHOLICS RECOVERY PROJECT, A SMALL VOLUNTARY ORGANIZATION IN SOUTH LONDON WHICH SEEKS TO REHABILITATE HABITUAL DRUNKEN OFFENDERS USING COMMUNITY RESOURCES.
Abstract
OBJECTIVES OF THIS PROJECT WERE TO ESTABLISH A MORE INTEGRATED AND COORDINATED SYSTEM OF TREATMENT AND CARE FOR THE HOMELESS ALCOHOLIC; TO IDENTIFY AND REMEDY GAPS IN EXISTING SERVICES; AND TO BEGIN A RESEARCH PROJECT TO INVESTIGATE THE SUBCULTURE OF THE HOMELESS ALCOHOLIC. THE DEVELOPMENT AND ACTIVITIES OF THE PROJECT ARE TRACED FROM THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A HOME FOR VAGRANT ALCOHOLICS IN 1966 TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF NON-RESIDENTIAL SHOP FRONTS IN 1970, TO THE EMPLOYMENT OF A TEAM OF RECOVERED ALCOHOLICS IN 1974. RESULTS OF A PROJECT ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION ARE BRIEFLY DESCRIBED AS WELL. THROUGHOUT THE BOOK THE VIEWS OF THE ALCOHOLICS THEMSELVES ARE INTEGRATED WITH THE ATTITUDES AND EXPERIENCES OF THE PROJECT WORKERS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
