The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) is a huge and populous country that provides excellent experience related to the conduct of comparative research into alcohol and other psychoactive drugs.

Abstract

Scientific thinking in the USSR is characterized both by general agreement with that in other European countries and by some differences in emphasis. The writing of both Anokhina and Ivanets emphasizes the value of adopting generally acceptable definitions and research approaches to promote comparative studies. However, researchers in some countries would give greater emphasis to alcohol-related problems that are related to inappropriate drinking that is acute rather than chronic. Therefore, future research should focus on measuring patterns of both alcohol use and alcohol-related consequences in the general population. As Anokhina and Ivanets note, future studies also need to be based on awareness of the many practical problems involved in these research efforts. 6 references
