Annotation

In an attempt to outline known theory explaining fiber end appearances, the authors reviewed available literature on the use of the scanning electron microscope to identify the cause of fiber damage and noted a dearth of published information applicable to forensic investigations.

Abstract

The lack of extensive, systematic, and collaborative investigations in the area of forensic textiles has made it impossible to establish theories explaining fiber end appearances for fibers taken from damaged yarns and fabrics, as would be the case in many forensic investigations. Theories for single fiber fracture/failure have been established by textile scientists and may serve as the starting point for fabric damage analysis. The literature review indicates a need for comparative studies of single fiber damage and fabric damage analysis and a need for collaborative studies involving both textile and forensic scientists. 14 references
