The Singapore Penal Code includes several provisions for the use of alternative sanctions at various stages of the sentencing process.
Abstract
Non-custodial sanctions in sentencing include fines, conditional discharge, absolute discharge, and probation orders. Alternatives to imprisonment at the post-sentencing stage range from remission to work release schemes for short-term prisoners and pre-release employment schemes for long-term prisoners. The Juvenile Court is empowered to impose any of these non-custodial sanctions on offenders: acquittal or discharge, release on bond, commitment to the care of a relative, probation, or parole of an offender from approved schools. The Ministry of Home Affairs is currently investigating the possible future use of community service orders and home detention as ways to divert minor offenders from the criminal justice system. 3 appendixes
