THE FIREARMS POLICY AND REVIEW PROCEDURES OF THE BOSTON POLICE DEPARTMENT ARE COMPARED WITH THOSE OF OTHER MAJOR POLICE DEPARTMENTS; BOSTON POLICE FIREARM DISCHARGES FROM 1970-1973 ARE CATEGORIZED.
Abstract
OF 210 SHOOTING INCIDENTS, 102 WERE IN RESPONSE TO A FLEEING SUSPECT AND 74 WERE IN RESPONSE TO ASSAULT AND BATTERY OF A POLICE OFFICER. OTHER CITIES COMPARED WITH BOSTON ON POLICY AND REVIEW WERE LOS ANGELES, NEW YORK, SAN DIEGO, WASHINGTON, SEATTLE, DALLAS, CHICAGO, AND OTHERS. THE PRACTICES OF WARNING SHOTS, SHOTS TO ATTRACT ASSISTANCE, AND SHOTS DIRECTED AT JUVENILES ARE BROUGHT INTO QUESTION. TWO PROPOSED NEW GUIDELINES FOR BOSTON POLICE' USE OF DEADLY FORCE ARE SUBMITTED FOR REVIEW.
