THIS PHOTOGRAPHIC HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES MARSHALS SERVICE REVIEWS ITS ORIGIN, TRADITIONAL DUTIES, AND RESPONSE TO MODERN LAW ENFORCEMENT PROBLEMS.
Abstract
A BRIEF HISTORY AND OUTLINE OF THE US MARSHALS AND THEIR DUTIES IS TOLD THROUGH PHOTOGRAPHS. MODERN DUTIES INCLUDE SUPPORT FOR THE FEDERAL COURT SYSTEM, ENFORCEMENT DUTIES FOR THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE SUCH AS THE ARREST OF FEDERAL FUGITIVES WHO FAIL TO APPEAR IN COURT AND PROBATION AND PAROLE VIOLATORS. OTHER DUTIES INCLUDE TRANSPORATION OF FEDERAL PRISONERS, SEIZURE OF PROPERTY UNDER COURT ORDERS AND SEIZURES IN ADMIRALTY CASES, AND SERVICE IN CIVIL DISTURBANCES AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO MILITARY INTERVENTION. A LIST OF CIVIL DISTURBANCES IN WHICH US MARSHALS HELPED TO RESTORE PUBLIC ORDER IS GIVEN. SERVICE TO THE ATTORNEY GENERAL INCLUDED DIVERSE ACTIVITIES SUCH AS THE TAKING OF THE FIRST AND SECOND CENSUS TO SECURITY FOR DOMESTIC TRANSPORTATION OF NUCLEAR MISSLES, AND WITNESS SECURITY. THE US MARSHALS ATTAINED FULL BUREAU STATUS IN 1974. INDIVIDUAL MARSHALS ARE EMPLOYED UNDER A COMPETITIVE MERIT SYSTEM. A SERVICE HONOR ROLL AND MANY PHOTOGRAPHS ARE INCLUDED. (RFC)
