This report presents the U.S. Justice Department's goals and objectives for fiscal years 2003-2008.
Abstract
One of the Justice Department's goals is to prevent terrorism and promote the Nation's security. A second goal is to enforce Federal laws and represent the rights and interests of the American people. A third goal is to assist State, local, and tribal efforts in preventing or reducing crime and violence. A fourth goal is to ensure the fair and efficient operation of the Federal justice system. For each of these goals, a number of objectives are specified. Strategies for achieving each objective are also outlined. Following the presentation of goals and objectives, a chapter presents ways in which the Justice Department will promote efficiency and integrity in support of its mission. The chapter presents 10 management initiatives that will be pursued by the U.S. Attorney General. The President's Management Agenda is also presented. It includes strategic management of human capital, competitive sourcing, improved financial performance, expanded electronic government, and budget and performance integration. In addition, the President's Management Agenda includes nine program initiatives, one of which ("Faith-Based and Community Initiative") applies to the Justice Department. A chapter section on integrity in the Department of Justice features brief descriptions of the work of the Office of the Inspector General and the Office of Professional Responsibility. The concluding chapter focuses on program evaluation. A table provides the current schedule of major program evaluations, organized by the strategic goal the program serves. Appendixes present a cross reference of strategic objectives, external factors that may affect goal achievement, the President's Management Agenda criteria, a glossary of abbreviations and acronyms, and Justice Component Web sites.
