The media are often accused of presenting the spectacular side of urban violence and thereby encouraging it.
Abstract
Following on from a survey carried out with the editorial staffs of the local and regional press in France, this article shows that, on the one hand, the effect on the reader and circulation is not the main motivation behind the media treatment of urban violence. The article indicates that, on the other hand, the media's instrumental use of urban violence is not only journalistic but more generally translates as a detachment from the political meaning of such violence. 57 references
