THIS PAPER DRAWS HEAVILY ON EXAMPLES FROM THE DUTCH RESISTANCE OF 1940-1945 TO ILLUSTRATE THE DIFFICULTIES OF OBTAINING A MASS FOLLOWING IN A HIGHLY URBANIZED SOCIETY.
Abstract
LATIN AMERICA AND RUSSIA ALSO SUPPLY EXAMPLES OF THIS. THE AUTHOR CONCLUDES THAT RESISTANCE GROUPS IN AN URBANIZED ENVIRONMENT CAN RUN INTO SUCH GREAT DIFFICULTIES, THAT IN THEIR FORM OF ORGANISATION THEY SOMETIMES COME TO DISPLAY THE ARCHAIC FEATURES OF THE SECRET SOCIETY, WHILE, IN FAILING TO OBTAIN A MASSFOLLOWING, THEIR ACTIVITIES CAN EASILY DEGENERATE INTO NOTHING MORE THAN TERRORISM AND BANDITRY.
