THREE TESTS TO DETERMINE THE DEGREE OF 'AUTHORITARIANISM' IN FOUR GROUPS OF ROYAL CANADIAN MOUNTED POLICE (RCMP'S) DIFFERING BY RANK AND EDUCATIONAL LEVEL ARE REPORTED.
Abstract
THESE GROUPS WERE COMPOSED OF JUNIOR RANKING COLLEGE GRADUATES AND NON-GRADUATES BEFORE AND AFTER RECRUIT BASIC TRAINING AND SENIOR-RANKING COLLEGE GRADUATES AND NON-GRADUATES. THE FINDINGS SUGGEST THAT A UNIVERSITY EDUCATION PREVENTS THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN AUTHORITARIAN, CONSERVATIVE, AND RIGID ATTITUDE. THE FINDINGS ALSO SUGGEST THAT EXPERIENCE IN POLICE WORK DOES SOMETHING TO THE POLICE OFFICER TO MAKE HIM AUTHORITARIAN, CONSERVATIVE, AND RIGID.
