This five-lesson training course for correctional officers deals with the prevention of AIDS and hepatitis B transmission.
Abstract
The first lesson focuses on recognizing the dangers of the hepatitis B virus by describing the hepatitis B epidemic, the risks of exposure, the course of the disease, and methods of diagnosis, detection, treatment, and prevention. The second lesson covers the HIV virus and AIDS, means of transmission, workplace hazards, and treatment options. The third lesson provides detailed information on the transmission of both hepatitis B and AIDS, outlining body fluids that can carry the viruses and which occupational tasks can expose correctional officers to them. Correctional officers learn about universal precautions and how to use personal protective equipment. The final lesson covers safe work practices for performing searches, disposing of used needles and other sharp instruments, decontamination procedures, and handling infectious waste.
