Abstract
This publication describes what crime prevention encompasses, demonstrates its effectiveness, details roles that various community members -- including government officials and agencies, civic and community organizations, businesses and business organizations, and neighborhood and social groups -- can and should play in preventing crimes. It also provides a framework for developing locally relevant programs that encompass many aspects of crime prevention, and suggests resources for those interested in more detailed discussions of various aspects of crime prevention. Reference notes follow each chapter. Characteristics of successful crime prevention programs as well as successful programs in various parts of the United States are identified. The Neighborhood Watch program is discussed. A list of organizations and clearinghouses with addresses and telephone numbers is included.
