This report presents data from the 1996 Uniform Facility Data Set (UFDS) Survey and extends the time series of substance abuse treatment data collected since 1976 by the National Drug and Alcoholism Treatment Unit Survey (NDATUS).
Abstract
The UFDS seeks information from all free-standing facilities that treat only substance abuse, and from specialized substance abuse units within multi-purpose health care institutions. Although the total number of clients has grown, broad characteristics of facilities remained stable or changed gradually between 1980 and 1996. There are large differences among the States in the number of clients in treatment as a proportion of the general population, in the substance abuse problems being treated, and in the mix of outpatient versus 24-hour care. The report presents data on clients in treatment, substances of abuse, client demographics, facility setting and service orientation, treatment-related services, managed care arrangement, and funding source.
