This report presents results from the 1999 national survey conducted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration regarding the location, characteristics, and use of alcoholism and drug treatment facilities and services throughout the 50 States, the District of Columbia, and other United States jurisdictions.
Abstract
Results of the Uniform Facility Data Set survey revealed that the number of facilities reporting in 1999 increased by 13 percent over 1998. The turnover in facilities was much greater than indicated by this number. Private nonprofit facilities made up 60 percent of the system, followed by private for-profit (26 percent) and State and local government (11 percent). Fifty-four percent of all facilities had managed care contracts in 1999, compared to 32 percent in 1995. Outpatient rehabilitation was the most widely available type of care, offered by 82 percent of all facilities. Twenty-five percent of facilities offered residential rehabilitation. Nineteen percent offered partial hospitalization; 13 percent offered outpatient detoxification. Five to 8 percent of the facilities offered residential detoxification and hospital treatment. Forty-five percent of the facilities offered special programs for people with dual diagnosis. Thirty-four percent of facilities had programs for adolescents. Twenty-two percent of facilities offered programs for persons with HIV/AICS or for pregnant/postpartum women. Tables, figures, and appended survey instrument
