This report gives a nationwide view of crime during the 1970's that is based on police statistics contributed by State and local law enforcement agencies. Crime rates per population size are computed using Bureau of Census preliminary figures for 1980.
Abstract
An introduction describes the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program (its history, data collection methods, reporting procedures, etc.) and discusses recent developments concerning the UCR Program. Crime Index offenses reported are murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson. Tables and charts illustrate statistics on the number of Index offenses reported (with type of weapon used, victim/offender relationship, trend analyses, etc.), the number of Index offenses cleared, and the number of persons arrested (by age, sex, ethnicity, and other factors). Data on law enforcement personnel are also presented; the number of law enforcement officers killed and assaulted and police employee data are included. Appendixes include table methodology, offenses in Uniform Crime Reporting, UCR area definitions, and 10-year trends in crime (1971-80). Overall, the decade saw a 50-percent increase in crimes reported to law enforcement as measured by the Crime Index. There were only 2 years -- 1972 and 1977 -- when society experienced a respite; all other years were characterized by increases. Graphs are included.
