This volume presents extensive tables summarizing data on crimes, clearances, persons arrested, and law enforcement personnel in the U.S. for calendar year 1979. The tables are based on statistics collected by the Uniform Crime Reports (UCR).
Abstract
Data reflect voluntary reporting of crime statistics by over 15,000 law enforcement agencies across the U.S. The first section describes the UCR program administered by the FBI. The subsequent section presents tabular data on crime index offenses. Data for each type of offense, comparisons with previous years, and characteristics of each type of offense are reported. Additional tables present data for major geographic divisions, individual States, standard metropolitan statistical areas, cities, towns, and counties. National averages for the value of property stolen are given for each property offense. Another section provides profiles of persons arrested in terms of age, sex, and racial distributions. Comparisons of persons arrested in cities, suburban areas, and rural areas are presented. The volume's final section provides data on law enforcement personnel for different geographic areas. Appendixes present the methodology used, offenses listed in UCR, UCR area definitions, and graphs showing crime trends from 1970 to 1979. Footnotes are included for many of the tables.
