This document describes the methodology used to obtain a data set from the Uniform Crime Reports (UCR), 1966-76, that consists of an aggregation of all relevant law enforcement reporting agencies into Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas (SMSA's) and corresponding approximate aggregations of crime rates and dispositions.
Abstract
After describing original UCR records, the report details procedures for obtaining the SMSA aggregate data set. The information includes the SMSA aggregation processing counts and descriptions of the methodologies for calculating population-based crime rates, offense-based clearance rates, and charge-based crime rates. An SMSA master list is included. Types of information to be reported in the study include number of offenses cleared by arrest of juveniles; number of persons charged with a crime, found guilty as charged, found guilty of a lesser offense, and acquitted or dismissed; number of persons referred to juvenile court; and number of persons disposed by other means. Each case has approximately 160 variables and includes annual statistics on 8 Index crimes -- murder, manslaughter, rape, robbery, assault, burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle theft. A library and servicing data sheet is included.
