Violence is examined with respect to its definition, current and recommended societal responses, victim services, and violence prevention, based on research and theory in sociology, clinical psychology, psychiatry, social work, neuropsychology, behavioral genetics, child development, and education.
Abstract
The discussion emphasizes the need to distinguish among different types of violent behavior and to understand the biological and social factors that influence human behavior. Individual chapters analyze research findings on the nature and extent of violence, social causes of violence, individual causes of violent behavior, the role of violent television programming, and a biosocial model of violence. Further chapters focus on the relationship between drug abuse and violence, issues related to gangs, sexual assault, spousal homicide, child abuse, the impact of physical punishment by parents on later aggression, and the impacts of domestic assault on its victims.
