Substance abuse treatment has become a significant component of the criminal justice system, since more and more offenders have a problem with alcohol or drugs. This manual is designed to train those who conduct treatment programs to teach offenders basic information about drug abuse.
Abstract
The first chapter of the manual covers the design of a treatment program with emphasis on treatment goals, treatment techniques (counseling, self-help, and specialized services), treatment formats, and aftercare. Subsequent chapters look at theoretical perspectives in drug abuse treatment, explanations of addictions, alcohol and other sedatives, narcotic analgesics (opiates), amphetamines and other stimulants, cocaine and crack, tobacco, hallucinogens, cannabis, HIV infection and AIDS, the impact of drug abuse and alcoholism on the family, relapse prevention, and special needs populations. A general overview of drugs and drug abuse is provided. Appendixes contain true/false study questions and answers, recommended films and resources, a suggested intake lecture, the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous, and lesson plan outlines.
