POLICE WILL EARN THE RESPECT OF YOUTH IF THE POLICE TRY TO UNDERSTAND AND RESPECT YOUTH'S EXPERIENCE AND NOT JUDGE THEM SOLELY ON THEIR BEHAVIOR.
Abstract
PEOPLE BEHAVE DIFFERENTLY BECAUSE THEY EXPERIENCE THEIR WORLD SUBJECTIVELY. THE YOUTH EXPERIENCE FORMS THE BASIS FOR A COUNTERCULTURE. THEY WANT MEANING AND IMMEDIATE EXPERIENCE, AND REQUIRE PARTICIPATION OF THOSE WHO WANT TO UNDERSTAND THEIR WORLD AND ITS MEANING. POLICE PROFESSIONALISM REQUIRES AN EFFORT TO UNDERSTAND COMPLEX SITUATIONS AND FOSTERS RESPECT BETWEEN YOUTH AND THE POLICE. DRUG ABUSE IS SEEN AS A WAY FOR YOUTH TO GAIN AN INTENSE EXPERIENCE IN A STATIC WORLD. TO HALT DRUG ABUSE, WE MUST PROVIDE ALTERNATIVE OPPORTUNITIES FOR EXPERIENCE AND CHANGE.
