This report examines a wide range of studies on the magnitude and severity of alcohol and other drug use among the work force, as well as the probable effects of alcohol and other drugs on the work force.
Abstract
These studies include laboratory experiments, field studies, epidemiological surveys, organization-specific prevalence reports, and descriptive accounts as well as empirical evaluations of drug intervention programs. Part I summarizes current knowledge on the primary causes and the severity and magnitude of alcohol and other drug use. One chapter provides insight on the etiology of alcohol and other drug use, and another examines the latest prevalence estimates and trends in alcohol and other drug-use behavior. Part II addresses the critical issue of the impact of alcohol and other drug use on behavior. One chapter summarizes a substantial body of literature that has evaluated the effects of various classes of drugs on performance within controlled laboratory settings, including effects of stimulants, sedatives, and marijuana. Another chapter reviews applied research on the potential causal relationship between alcohol and other drug use and various work-related outcome measures, such as job performance and productivity indicators. Part III addresses the effectiveness of intervention programs, with emphasis on drug-testing programs. Appended discussion of measurement, methodological and design issues, as well as drug-testing legal issues, chapter references, biographical sketches, and a subject index
