This compilation of articles investigates the perceived efficacy of gun buy-backs in preventing violence and represents the perspectives of researchers, citizen advocates, public health officials, and others who are involved on both sides of the gun control debate.
Abstract
Various gun buy-back and exchange programs are described in the articles. The first part of the compilation discusses the impact of gun buy-backs in relation to their effectiveness in crime control and community mobilization and examines gun buy- backs as a policy alternative. The second part of the compilation offers perspectives on gun buy-back implementation, with emphasis on gun reduction advocacy, getting guns off the streets, and gun buy-back program issues of concern to police officials. The final section of the compilation presents a commentary on gun buy-back, exchange, and amnesty programs and policy perspectives on future directions in gun buy-back programs. Supplemental information on gun buy-back statutes and programs is contained in three appendixes. References, tables, and figures
