Abstract
PROFESSIONAL, ORGANIZATIONAL, COMMUNAL, AND LEGAL CONDITIONS AFFECT THE WAYS IN WHICH POLICE DEPARTMENTS RECRUIT AND TRAIN NEW OFFICERS AND THE WAYS IN WHICH NEW MEN LEARN TO PERFORM THE COMPLEX ROLE OF POLICEMEN. PARTICULAR ATTENTION IS GIVEN HERE TO THE PROBLEMS OF ADJUSTMENT TO THE ROLE EXPERIENCED BY NEW PATROLMEN IN NEW YORK CITY.
