A 1-year pilot program, representing a cooperative effort of the Roanoke/Salem County Court Services Unit (Virginia) and the Co-operative Extension Service, was implemented in 1984-85 to supplement services for juvenile probationers through the use of outdoor adventure activities.
Abstract
The program used volunteers as leaders and assistant leaders. Training included certification in the 4-H Wilderness Challenge Program, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and first aid. Participants met twice monthly for planning and discussion groups. Planned outings were progressively challenging and included such activities as hiking, canoeing, and overnight backpacking. During the program, 17 youth were served at a total cost to the 2 agencies of approximately $1,600. Informal evaluation suggests that the program provides a cost-effective, community-supported means for increasing the self-confidence, decisionmaking and teamwork, and communication skills of juvenile probationers and high-risk youth. Modifications are proposed for the 1985-1986 program.
