A TREATMENT TEAM APPROACH USING A BLEND OF REALITY THERAPY AND BEHAVIORAL THERAPY IS DESCRIBED AS IT OPERATES AT THE FEDERAL CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION IN FORT WORTH, TEXAS.
Abstract
THE TREATMENT TEAM OPERATES IN CONJUNCTION WITH A THERAPEUTIC COMMUNITY THAT EMPLOYS TRANSACTIONAL ANALYSIS. PROFESSIONAL AND PARAPROFESSIONAL PERSONNEL COMPRISE THE STAFF, AND RESIDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO PLAY ACTIVE ROLES IN BOTH THE DEVELOPMENT OF TREATMENT PLANS AND DECISIONMAKING PROCESSES REGARDING UNIT POLICIES. RESIDENTS KNOWN AS 'RECTORS' ALSO ACT AS COUNSELORS AND ADMINISTRATORS WITHIN THE PROGRAM. THE TREATMENT TEAM IS DESIGNED TO FUNCTION AS A PROBLEMSOLVING MECHANISM, AND ALTHOUGH EACH TEAM MEMBER HAS A SPECIFIC JOB DEFINITION AND ROLE WITHIN THE UNIT, THESE ARE NOT RIGIDLY FOLLOWED IN TEAM DISCUSSIONS WHERE NUMEROUS SUGGESTIONS AND AVAILABLE OPTIONS NEED TO BE ANALYZED. ALTHOUGH THE PRIMARY MEANS OF TREATMENT ARE WITHIN THE UNIT STRUCTURE, THE INSTITUTIONWIDE PROGRAMS OFFER RESIDENTS OF ALL THE UNITS IN A VARIETY OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR SELF-IMPROVEMENT. OF PRIMARY IMPORTANCE ARE THE COED PROGRAMS THAT THE INSTITUTION OFFERS TOGETHER WITH THE NUMEROUS 'NURTURE GROUP' ACTIVITIES THAT INVOLVE A LARGE NUMBER OF VOLUNTEERS FROM SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES.
