This Drug and Alcohol Services Information System (DASIS) Report from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration explores referral sources for marijuana treatment in adolescent drug users.
Abstract
Referral sources for adolescents entering substance abuse treatments is the focus of this Drug and Alcohol Services Information System Report from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Focusing on treatment referrals for marijuana usage among adolescents, this report presents data from the Treatment Episode Data Set (TEDS). Describing primary referral sources as court and criminal justice referrals, self referral, and school and other referrals, this article argues that, according to TEDS data, by 1999 more than half of all adolescents referred for marijuana abuse treatment were referred by the criminal justice system, increasing at a higher rate than admissions through other referral sources. Furthermore, there were increases between 1994 and 1999 in referrals for male adolescent marijuana users and for marijuana users 12- to 14-years-old. This report also documents increasing numbers of Black and Hispanic adolescent marijuana admissions with white adolescents admissions increasing more slowly. 3 Figures
