This Japanese study describes and provides data on prosecution and trial, correctional institutions, and probation, parole, and aftercare.
Abstract
Data on the reception and disposition of cases are provided in the area of prosecution, and trial data encompass a summary of final adjudications and penalties imposed. Also discussed are frequency of appeals, suspension of prosecution and suspension of execution of sentence, and speedy trial. Data on correctional institutions cover average daily census, admissions and discharges, habitual multiple offenders, treatment of convicted prisoners (classification, education, prison industry, and vocational training), suspects and defendants, and women's guidance homes. Topics covered under probation, parole, and aftercare include development of noninstitutional treatment during the last 30 years, trends in the use of probation and parole, results under probation and parole, participation by volunteers, and pardons. Tabular data cover trends in dispositions by courts, trends in the average daily population in penal institutions, percentages and actual numbers of inmates in classification categories (1978-80), trends in numbers of probationers and parolees newly received by probation offices (1976-80), and ordinary pardons (1976-80).
