This article describes the classification, assessment, and treatment of mentally disordered criminal offenders in Ontario, Canada, and discusses the characteristics of the mentally disordered population treated at the Ontario Correctional Institute.
Abstract
It explains the criteria for admission to and the facility capacity of the Ontario Correctional Institute, the primary institution for the emotionally disturbed incarcerated in the Province. It describes how residents are placed and how a course of treatment is determined. The core program consists of routine assessments of health, psychological, and social status; unit-based and group meetings; counseling; and recreational and other services. Psychotherapy, anger/aggression control training, behavior therapy/biofeedback, health skills training, drug abuse education, and other treatment alternatives are offered. The Correctional Institute is acting increasingly as a link between the correctional system and the Province's health system, a positive trend that can only continue with increased funding. Three references, classification/assessment procedures, and jail statistics are appended.
