This article provides background information and treatment perspectives for counselors and psychologists in the treatment of adult male sexual offenders in prison settings.
Abstract
One treatment program in Florida determines eligibility for treatment on the basis of the offender's willingness to accept treatment voluntarily, absence of psychoticism or mental retardation, and a release date consistent with time needed for treatment. Assessment includes the collection of background and offense information and administration of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory and the Multiphasic Sex Inventory -- a measure of sexual deviance. Group treatment goals focus on members' poor self-esteem, lack of appropriate assertiveness, poor social skills, and poor management of hostility and aggression. Particular methods depend on therapist attitudes and expertise and client variables. Possible methods include behavior modification, skills training, and psychodynamic approaches. 2 tables and 31 references.
