THE EFFECT OF ATTEMPTS IN SIX CORRECTIONAL SETTINGS IN CALIFORNIA TO INDUCE INSTITUTIONAL CHANGE THROUGH STAFF TRAINING.
Abstract
THE MOST IMMEDIATE TASK OF THE PROJECT WAS THE TRAINING OF 50 MIDDLE MANAGEMENT STAFF MEMBERS IN AN EFFORT TO SHAPE THEIR CORRECTIONAL PHILOSOPHIES ALONG MORE TREATMENT ORIENTED LINES. THE EXPERIMENTERS ALSO ANALYZED THE COPING STRATEGIES DEVELOPED BY THE INSTITUTIONAL ADMINISTRATORS IN THEIR ATTEMPTS TO HANDLE THE OFFER OF OUTSIDE RESOURCES. RESISTANCE TO CHANGE AMONG THE TRAINEES WAS EXAMINED AND IT WAS FOUND THAT THEIR ORIENTATIONS TENDED TO MOVE IN A TREATMENT DIRECTION, WHEREAS THE TOTAL STAFF ATTITUDES WERE SUBSTANTIALLY UNCHANGED FOR THE SIX FACILITIES. THE MANNER IN WHICH STAFF RESISTANCE TO CHANGE WAS OVERCOME IN TWO CALIFORNIA YOUTH AUTHORITY SCHOOLS IS DESCRIBED IN DETAIL.
